How goes the battle?

Lady and I are ready for St. Patrick’s Day. Are you?

There are a ton of things going on tomorrow in and around Boston. If you are able to rage on a Wednesday evening, more power to you. Here are a few fun places you might want to check out:

1. The (Mc) Pour House – They’re serving a traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner for $7.95. There’s no cover, but there is Irish music. 907 Boylston Street, (617) 236-1767 http://www.pourhouseboston.com/

2. The Black Rose (one of my personal favorites) – Opens at 6am (jeekers, that’s intense!) serving up a free traditional Irish breakfast for the first 100 people. Beer served at 8am, Black 47 (Irish rock band) at 9:30am and traditional Irish music at 12pm. 16 State Street, Faneuil Hall, (617) 742-2286 http://www.irishconnection.com/blackrose.html

3. Tommy Doyle’s – Opens at 8am with some bangers and mash. They’ll have lots o’ Guinness and lots o’ bagpipes (every half hour.) 96 Winthrop Street, Cambridge, (617) 864-0655 http://tommydoyles.com/

4. The Green Briar – Opens at 9am serving corned beef sandwiches with Guinness mustard (interesting?) 304 Washington Street, Brighton, (617) 789-4100 http://www.greenbriarpub.com/greenbriarpub/

5. Lir – Opens at 10am with all the right ingredients – corned beef and cabbage, car bombs (at 10am? I’m not too sure that’s in anyone’s best interest…) and Irish music of course. 903 Boylston Street, (617) 778-0089 http://www.lironboylston.com/

6. Clery’sC - Opens at 11am with Guinness Beef Stew and Black Russians with Guinness floaters (quite a combo.) 113 Dartmouth Street, (617) 262-9874 http://www.irishconnection.com/clerys.html

7. The Burren – Authentic Irish feel, opens at 6am (like I said, authentic Irish feel) with a full Irish breakfast. Traditional Irish music starting at 12pm continuing throughout the rest of the day. 247 Elm Street, Davis Square, Somerville (617) 776-6896 http://www.burren.com/

Tomorrow we’re going to the Celtics game again; hopefully the luck of the Irish will be with them this time! I’m also hoping we’ll see some Irish step dancers! When I was a dancer, this time of the year used to be so busy! (back in my youth)

In other non-St. Patrick’s Day related news… My Dad shaved his mustache off. My Mom texted me a picture of it. His upper lip has been in hiding for years, and it has now been set free!

Also, I have a quick bone to pick. Yesterday I was passing by the elevators at work, there was an older man who works on my floor waiting there to head home for the day. I passed by, ready to say hi and he said ‘How goes the battle?’ ‘How goes the what-who-excuse me?’ was probably close to my response. And I’m sure I was bright red due to my lack of understanding.

Today, a very nice foreign man at work passed me by in the hall saying, ‘How goes it?’ in his thick accent (I actually still haven’t figured out where he is from – maybe I’ll just ask…) I was confused so I just smiled (this happens often, no big deal. I was still red though – that goes without saying.)

Listen, I appreciate the hello, I really do. I’m all about being friendly. But I’m tired and Mondays/Tuesdays are long days, I can hardly understand basic English nevermind whatever the hell you’re saying right now. I’m sorry, but what happened to just a simple ‘How are you today?,’ it would make things a lot easier if we could stick with this.

But, you know what? Beggars can’t be choosers and I rather these guys be friendly by saying hello in their own way rather than be rude and totally ignore me in passing. I might have been a bit embarrassed but at least I got a chuckle out of it, and you know what – with my confused expression – they probably did too!
